Tend Your Own Garden: Sustainable Caregiving Begins with You

As caregivers, we become experts at tending to everyone else's needs. We manage appointments, medications, insurance battles, therapies, and countless moments of advocacy, often without realizing that our own lives have become an afterthought. Imagine your life as a garden. Healthy habits like a morning walk, nourishing meal, annual checkup, quiet moment of reflection, or conversation with a friend is a seed that strengthens your resilience. So are the boundaries you set. Saying yes only when it is a wholehearted yes and giving yourself permission to say no when that is what you truly need are acts of self-care, not selfishness. Sustainable caregiving begins by recognizing that you deserve the same care and attention you so willingly give to the person you love.

For families living with a Rare disease, this imbalance is especially common. We rarely miss a specialist appointment for our loved one, but we quietly postpone our own preventive care. Annual physicals become "next month." Dental cleanings are rescheduled or perhaps forgotten entirely. Mammograms, colonoscopies, eye exams, and routine blood work are delayed because there is always another urgent need demanding our attention. While advocating fiercely for our Rare family member, we can unintentionally neglect the very person who makes that advocacy possible. The reality is simple: if we fail to care for ourselves, we jeopardize our ability to continue caring for those who depend on us.

Tending your own garden is not selfish…it is one of the most important acts of advocacy you can make. Every healthy choice, every boundary honored, every authentic "yes," and every courageous "no" replenishes the energy, patience, and strength required for this lifelong journey. Caregiving is not a sprint; it is a marathon, and no garden flourishes without regular watering, nourishment, and care. When we choose to care for our bodies, protect our time, and honor our limits, we create the sustainability needed to remain present, resilient, and hopeful for the road ahead.

The next time you schedule an appointment for your loved one, pause and ask yourself: "When was the last time I tended to my own garden?" Then take one small step—schedule your own preventive appointment, take a walk, decline an obligation that doesn't serve you, or say yes to something that fills your soul. Your health, your peace, and your well-being matter. After all, the strongest advocates are those who remember that caring for themselves is part of caring for the ones they love.
