Creating Strong Teams Through Heart-Based Communication
By Padma Gordon
Creating a strong caregiving team begins with skillful, heart-based communication. It starts with being in relationship with yourself, knowing what you need, recognizing what your loved one needs, and sensing what the larger team needs as well. From this grounded place, you can make clear requests, ask for support with openness, and invite collaboration rather than conflict. Equally important is being willing to hear both yes and no. When you can listen, reflect, and remain connected even when the answer isn't what you hoped for, trust begins to grow. Strong teams are built one conversation at a time.
This is much easier said than done. When your loved one with a Rare disease is suddenly facing unexpected tests, difficult decisions, or another medical setback, your nervous system can become overwhelmed. It's easy to react from fear or exhaustion instead of clarity. That's why it's so important to find places where you can be witnessed and supported. Our weekly support group offers a space to share honestly without unloading your emotions onto family members or your care team. If no one is available, try a Conscious Rant. Step outside, look up at the sky, and let yourself speak freely. Give voice to your fear, frustration, grief, or exhaustion. Let the earth and sky bear witness. Sometimes support also comes from unexpected places like a conversation with another caregiver in a hospital waiting room or someone who simply understands what you're living through.
As you create your caregiving team, remember that you are part of that team too. Look for little sips of time throughout the day to nourish yourself—a few conscious breaths before an appointment, a quiet cup of tea, a short walk, or a moment of gratitude. Pause often and ask yourself, What is needed right now? From this grounded place, you can communicate with honesty, collaborate with greater ease, and move through conflict with more grace. Caring for yourself isn't separate from caring for your loved one—it is one of the most important ways you create a sustainable, harmonious team built on trust, clarity, and heart.
Coming Up On August 4th: Communicate With Love As You Grieve
As caregivers, you often carry the quiet weight of anticipatory grief while continuing to lead and coordinate the circle of people who support your medicalized family. In this session, we will explore how to have the tender conversations that may arise as we face questions about the future and the end of life with loved ones. These conversations require courage, presence, and compassion for ourselves and others who may also be navigating fear, grief, or uncertainty.
Together we will reflect on how to communicate honestly and lovingly with family members and professionals who care for your child. Rather than falling into people-pleasing or control, we will explore ways to speak with clarity, diplomacy, and an open heart so that everyone feels seen and heard. This will be a rich conversation where we can learn from one another and leave with practical ways to approach these difficult dialogues. 🌿
Join Us for the Women's Empowerment Circle every Tuesday at 10am PST.
